Last night in a great discussion about sustainability, youth politics, and compassion, Ian Somerhalder, of The Vampire Diaries and Lost fame (also the founder of the animal rights-centric Ian Somerhalder Foundation, ISF and someone who has discussed green policy with President Obama himself) said that his best advice for our generation is to believe in ourselves.
I couldn’t agree more, and wish more of my fellow 80’s babies would as well. In all the talk about how whiney, inconsiderate, lazy, entitled, hipster, and down right awful as a generation, I’d love to see stories of how we give our time to charity, stand up for causes we believe in, start businesses with nothing but a laptop and an iphone. Let’s be proud of ourselves! Let’s have pride. Let’s show pride.
Checking out the twitter chat (sponsored by Toms of Maine) made me think of this quote from Michelle Obama, who is a great role model for me in terms of confidence, intelligence, poise, physical health, environmentalism, romance (I honestly think the Obama’s are a couple to look up to!), fashion, and all around power.
“One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don’t invest any energy in them, because I know who I am.”
And so today I ask you, in what ways do you always stay true to yourself?
